Hej, I am Nele. I am researcher working at the intersection of European foreign, security and defence policy, international organisations, and global governance. My primary interests are in the cooperation between the EU and NATO, the role of member states in security organisations, and EU crisis management operations.
Since July 2022, I work at the Chair for International Security & Conflict Studies at Helmut-Schmidt-University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg. I am also Non-Resident Research Fellow at the Global Europe Centre based at the University of Kent, where I obtained my PhD in International Relations. I hold degrees from the University of Bremen, Germany and the University of Bath, UK, and also completed studies and conducted research at the University of Helsinki, Finland and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.
Previously, I worked at Leuphana University Lüneburg, the Foreign Policy Institute of the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University, Washington DC, University College London and the University of Kent. I have also served as co-convenor of the BISA European Security Working Group, UACES Graduate Forum Committee and as co-editor of the Journal for Contemporary European Research (JCER).
Outside of academia, you can find me training for my next triathlon, running around with one of my running clubs, or hiking up the next mountain summit.
